The Fiery Furnace: God Is With Us When We're Afraid
This month, our Christian lesson comes from Daniel 3 and the story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego.
King Nebuchadnezzar ordered everyone to bow down to a golden statue. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego knew they should worship only God, so they chose to do what was right, even though they were afraid of what might happen.
The king had them thrown into a fiery furnace, but they weren't alone. God was with them and kept them safe. When they came out, they weren't burned, and they didn't even smell like smoke.
This Bible story helps children understand courage in a way that connects with their everyday lives. Courage doesn't mean we're never scared. It means we can make a good choice and trust God to be with us, even when something feels hard.
For young children, courage might look like telling the truth after making a mistake, including someone who feels left out, trying something new, or asking a grown-up for help. These moments may seem small, but they help children build confidence, compassion, and faith.
In the classroom, we'll talk about the brave choice Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego made and how God stayed with them. We'll also help children think about what they can do when they feel afraid and how they can help a friend feel brave.
At St. Matthew's Weekday School, we want every child to know that they're loved by God and never alone. Just as God was with Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in the fiery furnace, God is with us through difficult moments, new experiences, and everything in between.
