Art Week at St. Matthew’s Weekday School: A Week of Color, Creativity, and Joy

Art Week at St. Matthew’s Weekday School this summer was everything we hoped it would be. Our campers spent the entire week exploring different art forms, experimenting with new materials, and discovering just how much they are capable of creating.

We introduced our kids to painting, sculpting, collage, printmaking, and even a little watercolor resist technique that produced some truly stunning results. Each day had a new medium and a new set of creative challenges. Children who said “I can’t draw” on Monday were proudly showing off finished masterpieces by Friday.

One of the highlights of the week was a visit from artist Akeen Shomar, who came in and created alongside our campers. Seeing a working artist in action brought something new into the room. Akeen’s presence sparked conversations about what it means to make art, and the kids responded with an energy and focus that was wonderful to see.

We drew inspiration from some famous artists this week too. Campers learned about Vincent van Gogh and tried their hand at swirling, expressive brushwork. They explored the bold colors of Matisse and the simple shapes of Mondrian. These conversations sparked some of the most thoughtful discussions we’ve had at camp all summer.

By the end of the week, our classrooms looked like a gallery. Every piece was hung with care, and every child had a chance to talk about their work. That moment of pride is something we treasure.

Next week we shift from visual art to something you can hear: Music Week is coming, and our campers are in for a rhythm-filled, joyful few days.
