St. Matthew's Weekday School Went Under the Sea This Week
This week at St. Matthew's Weekday School, our summer camp became an ocean. Our Under the Sea theme gave campers a full week of discovery, creativity, and wonder inspired by the creatures and colors of the deep.
Our classrooms were decorated with paper jellyfish hanging from the ceiling, handmade coral reefs lining the windows, and sea turtle artwork covering every wall. Children learned about marine animals from starfish to sharks, explored how ocean ecosystems work, and made connections between what they see at the beach and the living world beneath the surface.
Art projects were a big part of the week. Campers created their own watercolor fish, built 3D sea creatures from paper plates and tissue paper, and painted ocean scenes that were as unique as the little artists who made them. We also did a "message in a bottle" writing activity where each child shared something they love about the ocean.
The week wrapped up with an underwater movement activity where kids pretended to swim, float, and glide like their favorite sea animals. The giggles were non-stop.
Up next: Art Week! Our campers are about to get seriously creative with color, texture, and all kinds of artistic techniques. Smocks are strongly encouraged.
