Bugs and Butterflies Week Had Our Campers Buzzing with Excitement

There is something magical about watching a child discover the world of butterflies up close, and this week at St. Matthew's Weekday School, we got to see that happen over and over again.

Bugs and Butterflies week was a deep dive into the science and beauty of the insect world, with a special focus on metamorphosis and the incredible journey from caterpillar to butterfly. Campers learned the stages of a butterfly's life cycle in detail, acted out each stage through movement activities, and created gorgeous painted butterfly art using symmetry techniques that turned out absolutely stunning.

We also explored other bugs this week, from fireflies to beetles to bees. Children made hexagonal honeycomb art inspired by the structure of a beehive and learned about the important role bees play in our environment. The appreciation and respect our campers showed for even the tiniest creatures this week was a joy to witness.

Our butterfly garden station, where kids could observe and sketch different species, was a favorite all week long. Many children asked to spend extra free time there.
