The Great Outdoors Week Brought Nature, Wonder, and Adventure to Camp
This week at St. Matthew's Weekday School, our summer campers took their curiosity outside. The Great Outdoors theme gave us the perfect excuse to slow down, look closely, and appreciate the natural world all around us.
Each day was built around outdoor exploration and nature-based learning. Campers went on guided discovery walks around our campus, keeping their eyes open for birds, plants, rocks, and signs of wildlife. We pressed leaves and flowers, made rubbings of tree bark, and built mini habitats for imaginary animals using sticks, mud, and natural materials.
Inside, we talked about ecosystems, weather, and the importance of caring for the environment. Children made their own nature journals and spent time each day sketching and writing about what they observed. The attention to detail our kids showed in their drawings was remarkable.
One of the week's highlights was a group project where campers designed and built a model outdoor habitat using craft supplies. The teamwork and creative problem-solving that went into those builds were wonderful to watch.
